Preoperative  Instructions Before Oral Surgery

Please follow these instructions to prepare for oral surgery with IV Sedation. This is a summary of our preoperative instructions. A more detailed list is provided at the time of your consultation.

  • Do not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for (6) six hours prior to the appointment. This includes gum, candy, and mints.
  • If you were prescribed a pre-op medication (Valium / Diazepam), take one hour before your surgical appointment with a small sip of water.
  • Take all routine blood pressure medications
  • No smoking for at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.
  • A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive the patient home. Your procedure may be postponed or rescheduled if a driver is not present at the time of your appointment.
  • The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia.
  • Please wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow. Darker colored clothing is recommended. Feel free to bring a blanket for comfort, as our surgical suites are kept at a cooler temperature.
  • Dentures, jewelry, and facial piercings must be removed prior surgery.
  • Do not wear contact lenses. Eyeglasses may be worn, but will need to be removed in the surgical suite prior to IV administration.
  • If diabetic, please bring your glucometer with you to your surgical appointment.
  • If you have a history of asthma, please bring your inhaler with you to your surgical appointment.
  • Remove nail polish and artificial nails prior to the day of surgery. Nail polish and artificial nails inhibit the ability to monitor accurate vitals.
  • If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or upset bowels, please notify the office prior to your procedure.
  • If instructed otherwise, please take all blood pressure medication with a small sip of water.
  • If you take other routine oral medications, please check with our office prior to your surgical date for instructions on taking these medications prior to your procedure.
  • If your there have been any recent changes to your medical history, please notify our office prior to your procedure.
